Youth ProgramsY-Buddies: Mentoring program that offers college students the memorable experience of being important in the life of a child and gives youth grades 3 - 8 positive role models in their life for friendship and fun. Y Buddies pairs college mentors with youth and asks that they meet with their Little Buddies weekly at a time that is most convenient to them. Time can be spent doing things as simple as reading a book together, working on homework, playing a game, or other activities, such as visiting museums or going to sporting events, Activities do not have to cost money, and mentors are provided with no- or low-cost activity ideas and the v-staff also plan a monthly fun large group event that gives you the chance to meet other college students. The program allows you to make a difference in the life of a child, develop leadership skills, make new friends, re-live the fun of childhood through large-group activities, explore personal growth, and gain experience for your resume
We also have weekly seminars that begin this upcoming Tuesday 10/16 6;30-8:00 OR Wednesday 10/17 4:30-6;00. The first week will be a basic information session so if you are at all interested in joining you should grab your friends and come on over, we will have fun games and prizes like always and would love to see you there. Newsflash
All honors students are invited to get involved with UHSA by joining a committee. Please email uhsa@umn.edu for more information or to join a committee. There are three main committees to choose from:
Academic Affairs: The Academic Affairs committee creates events that have more to do with academic enrichment. This year they have put on a Milk and Cookies Meet and Greet that brought Honors professors and students together in a relaxed environment to talk and get to know one another. They work on making the space between students and the Honors professors smaller and to lessen the stress of school work with fun events that can still apply to school!
Community Service: The Volunteer committee finds worthwhile volunteer opportunities that can make a difference to our community and the lives of all involved. They find organizations to work with, set up dates, and participate in all of the events. People Serving People has been a reoccurring volunteer opportunity this year. (The next date is on Sunday, January 31 from 12:45-3:15 and sign up is on a first come basis)
Social Affairs: The Social Affairs committee plans and executes social events for Honors students. So far this year they have organized the Welcome Picnic at MBH, the Ice Cream Social at MBH. For events like these, they have to buy food, utensils, reserve the space, find a date that works with other events that may be going on in campus, etc. |
